BELLEVILLE – The Belleville High School boys varsity soccer team had a good showing in the Essex County Tournament.
Erick Velasquez scored in the second half on an assist by Chris Sosa to lift the 17th-seeded Bucs to a 1-0 win at 16th-seeded Bloomfield Tech in the second preliminary round on Oct. 19. Elias Tapia made 10 saves for BHS, which avenged a 6-0 loss to Bloomfield Tech in the second game of the season on Sept. 12.
Two days later, the Bucs lost at top-seeded West Orange High School, 2-0, in the first round. West Orange, ranked No. 2 in the state by NJ.com, moved to a 15-0 record.
The Bucs bounced back with a 3-2 win over Science Park on Friday, Oct. 23, in Newark. Jairo Campoverde scored two goals and assisted on Josh Sanchez’s goal for the Bucs. Velasquez had an assist and Tapia made nine saves for BHS, which improved to a 6-9-2 record.
